Google released the final beta build of Android 12 earlier this month and is preparing to launch a stable version. Meanwhile, people at XDA have got their hands on the Android 12.1 build that the team is working on.
It’s been a long time since Google released a growing upgrade to a larger Android version, but this time, we’ll see it this year.
According to an XDA investigation, the Android 12.1 build has major changes to the visual design that have been optimized for foldable devices.
This is an important step for Google considering how it is becoming a popular foldable device. The UI has been improved to make full use of the larger display area.
The main theme is to enlarge everything so that things are easy to read as well as accessible. This is actually similar to how the Android UI works for tablets.
The System Settings interface has a two-pane method where the left pane lists the main settings and the right pane provides all the sub-settings based on the selected one.
One major difference is that the new Android 12.1 UI has a taskbar at the bottom. This will allow users to access their favorite or commonly used apps with just one tap and no matter which app they belong to. You can refer to the screenshot shared above to get an idea of what Google is working on.
There are rumors that Google itself is working on a foldable phone which will probably be called Pixel Fold. It is expected to be official in the fourth quarter of the year.
It seems that this is why we are seeing Google developing a custom Android UI specifically designed for foldable devices.
