The BMW X1 is an SUV-like model. It measures 4.45 m, is 19 cm shorter than the current BMW X3 (model 2011). It is on sale since September 2009 with all-wheel drive versions (called xDrive) or back ('sDrive).
SUV ratios have except for his height, 1.55 m, very close to the body of some family cars. It has no gearbox or other features that allow its use in rough terrain, so its use is focused mainly on road (especially rear-drive versions), where the outcome is good.
On how he handles asphalt, his driving is more like a tourist with a body higher than that of a car body on the ATV. It has more ground clearance (194 mm) that tourism, which is an advantage when driving on a road with a certain amount of snow or on a road in poor condition. On a snowy road, if the height of snow is small, a BMW X1 does not have to be a better choice than a BMW 3 Series Touring with AWD, or worse than a BMW X3 (most important in these circumstances may be the type tire). A X3 has a ground clearance slightly larger than the X1 (212 mm).
In deciding between these three, the price can be definitive. Comparing versions 20d diesel engine and AWD, the X1 is much cheaper, almost 7,000 €, a BMW 3 Series Touring (comparative sheet).
The most affordable BMW X1 (sDrive18d of 143CV) costs € 29,900 and has rear-wheel drive. A Toyota RAV4 or a front-wheel drive Ford Kuga are much cheaper (cost about 21,000 €). A front-drive Volkswagen Tiguan is also cheaper.
The BMW X1 xDrive18d (AWD) is priced at € 2,000 more than the rear. All-wheel drive gives some advantage when driving on slippery surfaces, it has a higher capacity to transmit engine power to the ground. According to BMW, also intervenes to correct the trajectory of the car (more information AWD "x-Drive" in the Technical Information section.) The AWD system has a clear disadvantage, in addition to the cost which is: does the car consume more fuel, accelerate less and need more room to maneuver.
Along with all-wheel drive and sporty chassis set-up (optional), it is possible to order the system "Performance Monitoring", which prevents the inside rear wheel during cornering to help the vehicle follow the path marked with the wheel in adverse circumstances eg brother was taking a bend at high speed. We have not tested this device; therefore we cannot make an assessment of its operation.
The driving position is very good for several reasons: the seats are comfortable and very well hold the body and its regulations, along with the steering wheel are large and can find a suitable position. The manual version has an automatic stop and start the engine when the car is stopped, for example at a stoplight. They also have a referral system of progress in the circular to be fuel efficient.
The X1 RWD Diesel stand out as having very low power consumption, according to official data. Today is the SUV of similar characteristics that consume less. In the Technical Information section there are details on the engines.
Like other brand models, the X1 also conveys a great sense of strength, for example when driving on a bumpy road. In general, the carrier coating materials and the fit between parts are good, but have details for improvement; there are pieces that seem cheap. In this sense, gives the impression that the X1 is more like a 1 Series than a 3 Series. This model does not look or feel of many BMW models of similar price a few years ago (eg the 3 Series, 1999).
Equipment
There is an optional package called "X-line" (gallery of the BMW X1 "package X-line), which includes a silver trim that runs horizontally across the air intake front bumper, side skirts different and, if optional roof bars, these are silver instead of black.
Some options available for the BMW X1 are: browser, sport seats, a panoramic glass roof, longitudinal bars in the ceiling and a rear camera for easy maneuvering. You can not have rear side airbags and knees.
